By Sanjoy Ray

GUWAHATI, Dec 4 While their friends had to make do with meagre pocket money from their parents, a group of school-going teenagers were dealing in lakhs of rupees and spending in thousands everyday.

They even travelled to various metro cities without caring for the air fare and enjoyed the hospitality of the best of hotels and restaurants on their own. Things were going like a fairy tale for these youngsters till some of them were arrested by the City Police on Friday, giving way to one of the strangest theft cases of recent times.

The teenagers were detained for allegedly stealing several lakhs of rupees from a store house located in Tarun Nagar area under mysterious circumstances.

Though the FIR registered states that only an amount of Rs 18 lakh were missing from a storehouse in Tarun Nagar area, owned by Pawan Agarwal, the owner of Datamation Services, a leading computer hardware outlet located in Ulubari, investigators and sources close to the accused do not seem totally convinced.

Sources close to the families of the youths claimed that the teenagers had stolen nearly Rs 1 crore from the storehouse which is owned by Pawan Agarwal. The money stolen was shared by around 12 persons, most of them minors.

"Of the four arrested, two are students of Guwahati Public School, while the other two are students of Delhi Public School and Hindustani Kendriya Vidyalaya," police said..

All the four are residents of Tarun Nagar area. The students, being juvenile, were later released on bail.

The detained youths, while confessing the offence, informed police that a group of other youths, most of them their friends, took share of the money stolen.

Of the four arrested were two brothers who were living in rented accommodations inside the campus which also had the storehouse. They were believed to have found the money while whiling away their time at the storehouse. Interestingly, the theft took place in August but the matter was reported to the police only recently.
