4 mosque leaders who sheltered Jamaatis arrested

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 13 - Assam Police on Monday arrested four mosque office-bearers for sheltering at least 12 Jamaatis of Uttar Pradesh and not disclosing it to the administration or state health department.

One mosque is in Boko area and the other at Chhaygaon of Kamrup district.

The Jamaatis, hailing from Meerat in UP, have been sent to a quarantine camp, police said.

There was a government instruction that if there were any such persons in any place, the information should be shared with the local police station or administration. But the Masjid committee suppressed the information. On that charge, we have arrested the president and secretary of one masjid and two functionaries of another masjid, a police official said.

Twenty eight of the 30 COVID-19 positive cases in the State have been linked to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation at Nizamuddin Markaz of Delhi. Many Markaz members of other states, particularly UP, are said to have come to Assam last month.
