BARPETA, July 27 - Though the flood situation has improved in Barpeta district and the rivers have shown a receding trend for the last three days, four lakh people are still reeling under flood water.

The situation in Baghbar, Barpeta and Kalgachia and Chenga revenue circles remained grim even on Monday and most of the villages under these revenue circles have to bear the brunt of the devastating flood for more than a month at a stretch.

According to official sources, total number of affected villages as on date is 214. Kalgachia Revenue Circle tops the tally with flood-affected 81 villages followed by Baghbar with 58, Chenga with 51 and Barpeta with 29.

As far as population is concerned, Kalgachia Revenue Circle with 1,82,222 flood-affected people tops the list. The number of affected people under Baghbar, Chenga and Barpeta revenue circles are 87000, 76,356 and 35,430, respectively.

All the low-lying areas under Sarthebari Revenue Circle are also under flood water.

Meanwhile, all the rivers flowing across the district are showing a receding trend since Sunday. If the weather continues to be sunny for another three to four days, the suffering of lakhs of people is expected to be reduced.
