4 killed in Digboi mishap

DIGBOI, Nov 25 - Four persons, including a woman, were killed and eight others injured when a passenger vehicle collided head-on with a coal-laden truck at Powai near here in the wee hours of Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Bisu Das of Margherita who was driving the vehicle, and passengers Urmila Devi, Jaleshwar Giri and Jairam Shah. The injured were initially taken to Margherita Civil Hospital but they were later shifted to Dibrugarh for advanced treatment.

The impact of the collision was so severe that the front top of the ill-fated passenger vehicle was totally smashed and the rescue team had a tough time in retrieving the bodies.

The victims hailed from Jagun in Tinsukia district and they were returning home after attending a marriage ceremony.

The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident leaving his vehicle on the road that resulted in a long queue of several other coal-laden trucks.
