4 held for killing leopard

DERGAON, April 23 - Four persons form Tarfad Ahomgaon were arrested by Golaghat police in connection with alleged killing of a leopard on Thursday.

Thagiram Gogoi (56), Nityananda Saikia (50), Jonemon Gogoi (32) and Raktim Gogoi (28) were arrested by a team led by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) along with Golaghat police at around 4 in the morning.

It may be mentioned here that the carcass of the leopard was recovered on April 18.

It was earlier alleged that the leopard was killed by a section of villagers and they had plans to consume it. However, later they buried the body of the leopard in a jungle.

Meanwhile after receiving information, Golaghat police recovered the carcass and sent it for post-mortem.

Finally, the team led by DFO Bhaskar Deka along with Golaghat police arrested the duo and interrogation is on.

The DFO Bhaskar Deka told this correspondent that the accused would be produced before the court later.

�We are investigating the matter seriously and no accused will escape from our net,� the DFO said. During the lockdown, several such cases of hunting of wild animals in the district have been reported.
