4 extortionists held in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Dec 5 - Four persons accused of extorting money from a rubber plantation owner in Meghalaya�s Ri-Bhoi district, were arrested on Friday, police said.

Three persons were arrested during an early morning raid in Pynker-C and Langmai villages while another one managed to give the police a slip, IG (Operations) GHP Raju said. The fourth one was picked up later from Pillingkatta area.

Demand notes of AMEF militant outfit, two country-made guns and two mobile phones were seized from their possession. The four accused have recently served demand notes to a rubber plantation owner and had plans to abduct businessmen, the IG said.

Meanwhile, in West Khasi Hills district, two persons kidnapped by militants were rescued in an operation while another businessman was abducted, police said.

John Lyngkhoi and John Paul Kharsyiemiong were kidnapped on November 29 and their rescue was made possible with the arrest of one of the kidnappers earlier in the day. However, the other abductors managed to flee.

One person identified as D Syiemlieh was kidnapped by armed militants from near Gulagao village in South West Khasi Hills district bordering Bangladesh last evening. � PTI
