3rd Indigenous Mango fest at Dhakuakhana today

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, June 21 - The 3rd Indigenous Mango Festival will be held in Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district on June 22. This was stated by Jitul Saikia, organiser of the event on Wednesday.

The unique festival for the promotion and preservation of various breeds of indigenous varieties of mango will be held this year in Normal School, Dhakuakhana. The festival is being jointly organised by the sub-divisional authority of Dhakuakhana, Rashtriya Grameen Jivika Mission (RGJM) of Dhakuakhana and Ghilamora Rural Development Blocks in technical collaboration with Wild Silk Society NE and Regional Agriculture Research Station-AAU, North Lakhimpur.

A discussion on the preservation, promotion and commercialization of mangoes of indigenous breeds are being organised that day to mark the festival. Dr Narayan Chandra Talukdar, Director, IASST, Guwahati, Dr Rajendra Prasad Das, Professor of Horticulture AAU, Jorhat will attend the discussion as resource persons. Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Dr Jeevan B will attend the festival as the chief guest. Interactive sessions between local farmers and students will also be held in the festival. More than 50 variants of indigenous mangoes will be exhibited and sold in that festival, said Jitul Saikia.

It may be recalled that the Wild Silk Society NE for the first time in the entire North East organised indigenous mango festival in 2017 in North Lakhimpur followed by the second one in Machkhowa, Dhemaji last year.
