AGARTALA, June 1 - Tripura registered its highest single-day spike of COVID-19 cases, with 39 new infections reported since Sunday, taking the state�s total active cases to 180.
Of the total 39 COVID-19 cases, most of patients have returned from other places like Maharashtra, Chennai, Delhi and Bengaluru.
One positive case has been detected at the Naisingpara Bru relief camp in Kanchapur subdivision and the patient has been sent to Agartala for treatment.
Despite the steep spike in the COVID-19 cases over the past few days, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday ruled out the possibility of community transmission. �As of now, I don�t see any possibility of community transmission of COVID-19 as the people, especially rural folk, are well aware of how to prevent the disease,� he told the media.
Sharing his experience, Deb said rural people have been maintaining social distancing to break the COVID-19 chain and were following the quarantine guidelines.
In Tripura, COVID-19 cases have started increasing after the arrival of stranded persons from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and Bangladesh. It appears that around 25 per cent of the people who have returned from outside have got infected by the novel coronavirus. So far, 14,000 people have returned and over 20,000 who are stuck in other states are expected to return shortly.
On the COVID-19 outbreak at the BSF battalion headquarters at Jawarharnagar in Dhalai district, the Chief Minister said the Central team has already submitted its report to the state and it was sent to the Home Ministry for taking remedial measures.
�The Central team was of the view that quarantine and social distancing were not followed properly at the BSF battalion headquarters (138 & 86) leading to the outbreak. In February, there were movements of jawans and they did not follow quarantine protocol. I heard a BSF commanding officer was removed because of laxity in responsibility,� he said.
On being asked about Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga�s opposition to Bru resettlement in Jampui Hills in Kanchanpur, Deb said, �He is senior to me. Any change in the resettlement of Bru needs approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The rehabilitation will move as per the decision of the state government concerned,� he said.
