SHILLONG, Feb 12 - The final number of candidates who would contest the 2018 Assembly election is 372, Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor said here today after the last date of withdrawal of nominations.
Altogether 378 candidates had filed nominations. Three candidates� papers were rejected after scrutiny and today three candidates withdrew their nominations, leaving 372 in the fray, the CEO informed.
The CEO also informed that a full team from the Chief Election Commission�s office would be coming to the State to assess the situation for two-days on February 15. The team would be holding meetings with different officials from State and Centre.
Moreover, Chief Secretaries of Assam and Meghalaya would be holding a meeting about the polling stations at the borders so that there is smooth conduct of the elections.
Meanwhile, there are 633 vulnerable and 315 critical polling stations in the State. West Shillong has been kept under extra watch after a grenade was today recovered from the vehicle of a person.
Throughout the State, 6391 arms have been deposited and Rs 2.5 lakh cash seized. History-sheeters have also been asked to sign bonds not to disturb peace during the elections, the CEO said.
