JORHAT, July 8 - Around 35,000 people of 20 revenue villages and different hamlets of West Jorhat were affected by the rising waters of River Bhogdoi, which washed away an embankment in Malowkhat area on Friday morning.
Revenue villages, like Malowkhat, Gharfolia, Ronga Gora, Rowriyajan, Barveti, Tingkhongia, Lower Gayon Gaon and 13 others were inundated by the flood water caused by a kilometre-wide breach of the embankment.
�People here did not anticipate such a disaster. No flood could touch these villages for decades,� said Achyut Kumar Neog, a local youth.
However, no incident of any casualty was reported as most of the young residents rescued the old-aged people and the ailing patients from the inundated houses before the State Disaster Response Force teams could reach them.
Jorhat DC (in-charge) Roshni Aparanji Korati and other supporting staff of departments concerned, reached several villages and extended relief materials to the people.
District administration officials said that four relief camps were established � at Malow Ali High School, Gharfolia Primary School, Sarvoday College and at the office premises of Horusorai Village Panchayat � to shelter the flood-hit people. Relief materials were distributed there.
Similarly, 4,498 people of Kaoimari, Gelekoni, Sumonimora villages and several nearby hamlets were hit by flood water of River Jhanji as the waters percolated through a ringbund since last night.
In Majuli, 24 villages were hit by the flood water at Ahotguri, Phuloni and Misamari village panchayats. District administration officials said that relief materials were sent to all the affected areas in Majuli and Teok.
