31 persons arrested for stopping trains illegally

GUWAHATI, Oct 18 - During the seven-day period from October 8 to October 14, the Railway Police Force (RPF) arrested 31 persons on charges of stopping running trains by illegally pulling the alarm chain without any valid reason or emergency in the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone.

�This is a punishable offence. The arrested persons were prosecuted under Section 141 of the Railways Act. In the same period, as many as 211 travellers were also found to be travelling without tickets or proper tickets and a fine to the tune of Rs 1,30,061 was realised from the offenders,� said Pranav Jyoti Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR.

Sharma said an RPF crime investigation team of the Guwahati Railway Station recently conducted the raid at the Prakash Travel Agency located at Paltan Bazar here following reports about the prevalence of illegal business of selling railway e-tickets.

�During the raid, one person named Biswajit Kundu (30) was apprehended along with eight e-tickets worth over Rs 6,120, generated by using his personal ID. One computer with accessories, one mobile phone and cash worth Rs 20,400 were also seized from his possession. A case has been registered with the RPF post of the Guwahati Railway Station,� added Sharma.

He said the railway authorities have been continuously conducting drives against such touts throughout the NFR zone and also regularly alerting passengers not to buy tickets from such touts to avoid problems during a train journey.
