30 lakh fake students in State

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 19 There are around 30 lakh fake students in the educational institutions of the State. They have been created by some of the teachers for their own benefit. This was stated by Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while replying to the debate on the cut motion on the demand for grant of the Elementary Education Department in the State Assembly today.

He also informed the House that the vacancies against the 6,000 posts of high school teachers were filled up last year through contractual appointments and the vacancies against the posts of high school headmasters would be filled up within the next 15 days.

On the issue of pension benefits to the retired school teachers, he said that 13,000 teachers are to get the benefit. The Pension Directorate of the State does not have the required staff to dispose of the files related to these teachers. Despite that, the Directorate is clearing 100 files in a day at present, he claimed.

Moreover, the State Government will challenge the cases filed by the teachers against the appointment of principals of the higher secondary schools and colleges, he said.

The bill for provincialisation of the Sanskrit Tols and the Madrassas would be tabled in the next session of the State Assembly, he told the House, adding, the Government is also trying to locate the new Government colleges proposed by it in the Assembly Constituencies where there is no college at present.

The Government is also mulling the idea of introduction of two high school final examinations. While the one will be for academic purposes, the other will be for the vocational purposes. In the latter, there will be seven subjects and to give the final shape to this course, the Chief Minister will study the similar courses available in some foreign countries during his next foreign tour, said the Minister.
