3 policemen sentenced to one-year RI

MORIGAON, June 1 - In a significant verdict, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Morigaon district of Assam has sentenced three policemen to undergo one year of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and pay a fine of Rs 5,000, and in the event of default, they will face RI for three more months. The judgement was delivered in a sensational case of outrage of modesty of a couple.

According to the case diary (Case No. 227/201 of Morigaon CJM court), one Mazarihul Islam and his fiancee were staying at a rented house at Phulbari in Morigaon town on August 17, 2011. Some local people lodged a police complaint that the couple were involved in immoral activities. The in-charge of Morigaon Police Station sent two officials � Anup Saikia, SI, and Krishna Saikia, ASI � along with a police team to the spot. The couple were reportedly forced to undress and the news showing them in a poor light was telecast in the local TV channels.

The then in-charge of Morigaon Police Station, Devajit Mahanta was accused of negligence as his junior officers �fabricated� the news for TV channels.

After hearing the allegation made by the victim, Mazarihul Islam, the court sentenced the then OC Devajit Mahanta, Anup Saikia and Krishna Saikia to RI of one year.
