GUWAHATI, July 10 - Three railway personnel of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone have won awards for showing exemplary alertness and devotion to duty which led to prevention of accidents. All the three personnel were recently awarded Rs 5,000 each along with a citation.

Utpal Patar, Gateman of LC gate No.ST/26 under Lumding Division, while on duty on May 17, closed the gate for passing of train No.15818 (Shilghat-Dhubri Rajya Rani Express).

But one vehicle and two motorcycles hit the gate barrier and obstructed the railway track. Apprehending imminent danger, Patar rushed with red signal flag on the railway line and the Loco Pilot of the Shilghat-Dhubri Rajya Rani Express managed to stop the train by applying emergency brake after noticing the signal.

Thus, a major collision leading to loss of life and property was averted.

On the same day, Md Firoz Alam, Senior Section Engineer, was on duty at Dhumdangi station under Katihar Division of NF Railway when he noticed the tilted condition of wagon No.98324 of a Tinsukia-bound goods train.

Sensing danger, Alam asked the Station Master to stop the train through his mobile phone. The train was stopped immediately and thus an accident was prevented.

Rajeev Kumar, Helper (Signal) noticed heavy smoke and flame in wagon No.7011107588 at Lava station under Katihar Division on May 28.

He immediately informed the Station Master to stop the train through his walkie-talkie and the fire was extinguished by using fire extinguisher.

The three NF Railway personnel were given the recognition for their timely action in averting major accidents.
