3 killed, 10 swept away by landslides in Mizoram

AIZAWL, June 13 - Three people were killed while seven others feared dead in landslides in Tlabung sub-division in southwestern Mizoram near the Bangladesh border and around 400 houses were inundated due to floods.

Sources from Tlabung town said that 10 persons were swept away by landslides along with their houses in three villages, including Marpara South, Changpui and Phairuangkai.

The Khawthlang Tuipui river (also known as Karnaphuli) inundated 350 houses within the sub-division, including 121 houses in Tlabung town.

Church, indoor stadium, ICDS centre, waiting shed, village council house, meat market, restaurants and playground were among those inundated by waters in Tlabung town.

Over 500 Young Mizo Association volunteers in Tlabung carried out rescue operations and evacuated the affected families and they were sheltered in community halls, schools and other safe buildings. About 130 families have been provided shelters.

The worst-affected villages are Serhuan, Tippereghat, Nunsury-II, Silkur, Tuichawng, Balukiasuri, Lamthai, Malsuri, Diblibagh leh Kalapani. Altogether, about 1500 families have been affected by floods. Road communication has also been badly affected.

Properties damaged by the floods in Tlabung town are estimated at Rs 10 lakh.

In Sairang town near Tlawng River, about 30 km west of Aizawl, 40 families have been evacuated due to flood and they are sheltered in Young Mizo Association�s community hall.

Landslides occurred in different places in Aizawl and elsewhere, snapping road connectivity in many places. In Aizawl�s Saron Veng locality, a building collapsed. However, there was no casuality in Tlabung.
