3 held in Jorhat for extortion

JORHAT, Oct 2 - Police arrested three youths on charges of demanding Rs 15 lakh from an ONGC employee here in the name of Ulfa(I).

The arrested persons are Madhurjya Rajkonwar (25), Girish Bagti (19) - both from Lakwa in Sivasagar district - and Krishna Bora from Kaziranga Bosagaon.

A police source said that the three youths had been reportedly demanding money from an ONGC employee residing at Rajamaidam New Colony here since the past few days by making calls to the employee and threatening him of dire consequences if the extortion amount was not paid.

The trio asked the employee to pay Rs five lakh as first instalment near a historic monument in Sivasagar on Sunday. In the meantime, the employee lodged an FIR at the Jorhat Police Station.

Police tracked the phone number used to make the extortion threats and managed to nab Madhurjya from Balighat under Simaluguri Police Station in Sivasagar district on Sunday, after which the other two accomplices too were arrested.

Investigation into the case is on. The three accused have been booked under Sections 384 ( Extortion) and 506 (Criminal intimidation).

The SIM card used to make the calls to the ONGC employee for issuing extortion threats was found to be registered in the name of a person from Kokrajhar district, the source stated.
