WILLIAMNAGAR, Oct 4 - Three villages in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya have been forced to go without electricity for more than six months, bringing untold miseries to the inhabitants.
After reeling under darkness for months together, the hapless villagers have now sought the intervention of the government.
The three villages � Patalgre, Nengsrang Adugre and Jingamgre � are not very far from the district headquarters, Williamnagar. The villagers have rued that despite lodging several complaints with the authorities, nothing has been done yet to alleviate their sufferings.
Interestingly, Nengsrang Adugre is the birthplace of incumbent Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) chairman Denang T Sangma. �We have been living in the dark for the past six months but no initiative has been taken to repair the line to give us relief. We had no other option but to bring this to the notice of authorities through the media,� said Balgra T Sangma, a villager.
The villagers said that they had complained to the executive engineer of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) but they are yet to receive any response.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills Swapnil Tembe said that MeECL has mobilised a team to reach the villages by foot to rectify the fault that led to the disconnection of power. �Vehicles are unable to ply at this moment due to rains which has made the situation difficult. The MeECL has informed that lack of manpower and inaccessibility has hampered their response,� the DC said.
