3 earthquakes jolt NE

GUWAHATI, July 19 - Three earthquakes in quick succession, within 29 minutes, rocked the NE region this afternoon. The epicentres of all these earthquakes were located in the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.

With these three earthquakes, the NE region has felt altogether 22 tremors during the current year.

According to the Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) here, the first earthquake, with a moderate magnitude of 5.6 in the Richter Scale, that occurred around 2:52 pm, originated at Latitude 27.7 degree North and Longitude 92.8 degree East in the East Kameng district. The depth of this earthquake was 10 km below the surface of earth.

This was followed by another earthquake of 3.8 magnitude around 3:04 pm. It originated at Latitude 27.4 degree North and Longitude degree East in the same district of Arunachal Pradesh. Its depth was also the same.

The third earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.9 occurred around 3:21 pm at Latitude 27.9 degree North and Longitude 93.3 degree East in Kurung Kamey district of Arunachal Pradesh. It, however, originated from a depth of 95 km, said the RMC. Kurung Kamey is adjacent to East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.
