By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Aug 23 - Three Congress MDCs (members of district council) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram have joined the BJP at the council headquarters, Kamalanagar, today.

Along with them, six former Congress councillors and their supporters also switched over to the BJP, consolidating the partys position in the autonomous council.

Mizoram BJP president Prof JV Hluna, MLA Dr BD Chakma, former Speaker of the State Assembly and State BJP core committee member Hiphei attended the induction ceremony.

The CADC has total 20 seats, of which the BJP had won five, the Congress seven and the Mizo National Front eight in the council elections held in 2018.

With three elected members of the Congress joining the BJP, its strength in the House has increased to seven. One BJP MDC Hiranand Tongchangya from New Jaganasury MDC constituency has quit the party and BJP leader Shanti Jiban Chakma has written to the CADC chairman for Tongchangyas disqualification for violating the anti-defection law of the CADC.

While speaking at the induction programme, which was held at the CADC Cultural Hall, the three Congress members said that they do not see any bright prospect for the Chakmas of Mizoram in any political party except the BJP.

They urged all sections of the people of the autonomous council to join the BJP and contribute towards taking the council in the right direction.
