3 child labourers rescued

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 11 - A team of the Global Organisation for Life Development (GOLD) and Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) with the help of Chandmari police today rescued three child labourers in the city.

They were found working in some hotels and meat shops and all of them are residents of the city. They could not continue with their studies due to poor financial condition and were forced to earn livelihood.

GOLD office-bearers said the three minors were aged between 11 and 13 years. The NGO members will produce them before the district child welfare committee and if necessary, will help them continue with their education. The GOLD rescue team comprised Kaberi Sarma, Monumati Barman and others.

GOLD and BBA have been working hand-in-hand in Assam to provide protection and rehabilitation to children under various exploitative conditions. Under this collaborative effort, earlier on December 30 they had rescued six minor boys who were allegedly employed as workers in hotels located in Hatigaon area. The rescued minors hail from villages of Morigaon, Nalbari and Udalguri districts. Five of them were sheltered in a city-based shelter house and one has been restored to the family.

Today GOLD also observed Surakshit Bachpan Diwas, a day dedicated to safe childhood, in the city.
