3 arrested for Dimapur killings

DIMAPUR, Jan 28 � The Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the Nagaland government to investigate the killing of nine persons whose bodies were recovered from Pachaspura area in Chumukedima near here on January 3, has arrested three persons so far in connection with the killings. The SIT also recovered the vehicle used for committing the crime besides other incriminating evidences and items.

Informing this in a release today, Nagaland DGP B Kezo said that the identities of the alleged perpetrators of the crime have been established following sustained interrogation of the three arrested persons. Although those responsible for the crime are evading arrest, all efforts are on to arrest them, the DGP said. He, however, refused to divulge the details of the crime at this stage due to the sensitive nature of the case and as it may also hamper investigations.

The State government had directed the SIT to investigate all aspects of the case and submit the report and supervisory note to the DGP on a regular basis for monitoring the progress of the case.

The State government has also constituted a three-member high power inquiry committee to probe the incident. The terms of reference for the committee are to inquiry into motives and reasons for the murders and circumstances leading to the commission of such heinous crime; whether the crime is the handiwork of individuals, groups of people or organisations; the identity of the perpetrators of the crime; the identity of the nine deceased persons and suggest remedial measures to ensure such incidents do not occur in future.

The Naga Rengma Hills Protection Force (NRHPF) had claimed responsibility for the killing of the nine persons who were identified to be Karbis from Karbi Anglong district of Assam.
