3 arrested for assaulting Mizoram cops

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, April 20 - Three residents of Tripura were arrested late on Sunday night for allegedly assaulting two personnel of the 5th IR Battalion of Mizoram on the previous day at New Kawnpui village in western Mizorams Mamit district.

The accused were identified as Santilal Chakma (31), Bimal Chakma (19) and Mohanlal Chakma (27) of Kawnpui-1 in Tripura.

A man hunt is on to find out others who might be involved in the attack.

The IR jawans guarding the border were allegedly attacked by Chakma villagers from Tripura after crossing the border. Police sources said the IR personnel had earlier entered into a verbal argument with the local task force volunteers of New Kawnpui, who were from the Chakma community, after the latter did not pay heed to the polices request to stop playing cards. The local volunteers, who were supposed to guard the border, were instead playing cards. Despite being asked by the police to stop playing cards, they ignored the advice.

Angered by this, the local volunteers crossed into Tripura border and sought the help of their tribesmen to attack the policemen.
