NEW DELHI, Aug 24 - After a long delay, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday sanctioned construction of a second railway line between New Bongaigaon and Kamakhya.

An official spokesperson said that the second line would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2,232.32 crore. The 176-km-long railway line is expected to be completed in five years. Besides facilitating the travel, upcoming industries in the region will have additional transport capacity to meet the requirements once the project is completed, said the spokesperson.

The single main railway line from New Bongaigaon to Kamakhya via Goalpara is an alternative route to the New Bongaigaon-Kamakhya line via Rangiya linking Guwahati. The line capacity utilisation of the BG single line section has already over-saturated, sources said.

Sources claimed that most of the gauge conversion projects in the northeastern region have been commissioned and work on the Bogibeel Bridge is being expedited.
