SHILLONG, May 25 - Meghalaya reported another COVID-19 positive case among the returnees today, thereby taking the total number of active cases to two and the total number of stranded people returning home to over 9,500.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that one more person who returned to the State has tested positive and is undergoing treatment at a Corona Care Centre at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills. The affected person who tested positive is one of the returnees from Chennai. �One more person has tested positive, taking the number of active cases to two,� Tynsong said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that there is �no need to panic� as there is a system in place and all those returning to the State are being thoroughly tested. He said that more than 5,000 tests had been conducted in the state so far.
On reports of CRPF personnel testing positive at Baridua, Tynsong said that instructions have been given to the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi district to take necessary action.
The Minister said the camp falls within Assam�s jurisdiction. However, since the other side of the road falls in Meghalaya, all precautions are being taken. �We are constantly in touch with our Assam counterpart on the issue,� he informed.
He further said that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has spoken to Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal about people returning from New Delhi not getting adequate food and water in trains.
�The government is trying its best to bring in the stranded people,� Tynsong added. However, there may be some shortcomings in certain cases and whenever such information are received �immediate remedial action is being taken.�
Tynsong said that the total number of people who have returned to the State till today has gone up to 9,500. However, more people are on their way home aboard special trains.
As part of the effort to bring in the stranded people, two trains - one each from Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh - would leave from their respective places on Tuesday evening.
There are 225 people returning from Rajasthan and 215 coming from Andhra Pradesh. Two more trains from Kerala and New Delhi would bring in the stranded people of the State and the trains would leave from these places on May 27.
Meanwhile, the State Government has decided to open a temporary wholesale vegetable market at the parking lot at Iewduh (Bara Bazaar.)
�For opening the temporary market, details are being worked out by the Deputy Commissioner,� he said.
