23 arrested for not wearing masks in public places

HAILAKANDI, May 8 - Police have arrested 23 persons for not wearing masks or covering their faces, and registered a case of lockdown violation since Thursday.

Altogether 48 cases have been registered and 233 arrests made since the enforcement of the lockdown, Superintendent of Police Pabindra Kumar Nath said on Friday.

Nath said 13 motor vehicles have been seized for violating the lockdown since Thursday. A total of 219 vehicles � 171 two-wheelers, 15 three-wheelers and 33 four-wheelers � have been seized so far. A sum of Rs 1,85,900 has been realised by way of fines.

Besides, police arrested three persons and registered eight cases against misuse of social media and spreading rumours.

The district police chief said that security along the inter-district border has been strengthened following COVID-19 positive cases in neighbouring Cachar district. �Following detection of COVID-19 positive cases in Cachar district, we have beefed up security along the inter-district border. Proper checking and medical screening of people coming from outside are being conducted. Also, the inter-state border with Mizoram has been partially opened for incoming people of Assam after thorough medical screening,� he added.

Movement of people and vehicles, except for emergency services and exempted categories, has been fully restricted from 6 pm to 6 am, Nath said.

Wanted criminal arrested: Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya alias Lekhoi, a mastermind of many criminal activities, including a dacoity at Katakhal in Hailakandi district, was arrested by a team of Hailakandi district police at Silchar in Cachar district on Thursday night.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint police team from Hailakandi and Cachar districts arrested the dreaded dacoit who is wanted in several cases in the three districts of Barak Valley in the past few years.

Hailakandi police was on the lookout for him after he masterminded a daring dacoity at a residence of an ex-CRPF jawan under Katakhal outpost in Hailakandi district on April 29.

A case under various sections of the IPC and Arms Act has been registered against Barbhuiya and his gang at Panchgram Police Station.

Search operations are on in many places in Cachar district, and Hailakandi SP Pabindra Kumar Nath termed the arrest as a major breakthrough for the police.
