2,200 km Indo-Bhutan car rally to start today

GUWAHATI, March 1 � Around 35 vehicles will start their journey from here to Bhutan after being flagged off at the Latasil playground tomorrow morning at 7. The car rally, billed-Indo Bhutan Car Rally, will cover about 2,200 km before finishing at Bhutan�s capital Thimpu.

Giving details about the technical aspects of the rally in a press conference here today, JP Mazuamdar, Clark of the Course for the rally said it will be a high-level rally where top drivers like Hari Singh will feature.

The JK Tyre sponsored rally has been organised in collaboration with Friendship Car Rally Association along with Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan.

Mazumdar also said that an amount of Rs 30 lakh is at stake as prize-money in the rally. He intimated that the drivers and the vehicles itself have to get fitness certificates from the prescribed authorities before taking off.

The Clark also informed that elaborate security arrangements have been made for the participants as the vehicles have to go through some dangerous areas.

Organising body official Kamal Bhusan said the motto of the rally is to connect people of the neighbouring countries. He also mentioned that this rally has been the biggest motor sports event in Eastern India.

Six times national rally champion Hari Singh said it will be fantastic event as the participants have to drive through some virgin routes at an altitude of around 1,400 ft. President of the organising club Pradip Choudhury also threw lights on the organising aspects of the event.
