21st Janajati Sports Meet concludes

JORABAT, Dec 30 - The 21st National Janajati Sports Meet under Akhil Bhartiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram concluded at the LNIPE in Sonapur today with a valedictory function attended by the Union Minister of State (Home Affairs) Kiren Rijiju as chief guest. Arup Thakuria, general secretary of the organising committee presented a brief report of the sports meet highlighting the number of participants, events of competitions, list of winners and other salient features of the four-day sports meet.

As per the report presented, Assam bagged the maximum number of 27 medals including 13 gold, nine silver and five bronze and were declared as the champions of the 21st National Janajati Sports Meet. In the interesting archery competition too, Assam bagged the maximum number of medals. The winners were awarded with medals and certificates by the chief guest and other guests.

In his address to the young sportspersons, Kiren Rijiju said that the tribal youth are naturally talented and the efforts of Akhil Bhartiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram would help them to streamline the talent into proper channels and provide them successful sports careers. Listing out the efforts of the Union Government in promoting sports among the youth, he sounded quite optimistic that the country will get more medals in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

The valedictory function also witnessed a demonstration of the excellent skills of tribal archers of Assam under the guidance of Phulshring Lepcha.
