HAILAKANDI, Oct 19 - Police have arrested 21 persons so far in connection with the mob violence at Laskarbazar in Nitainagar village of Hailakandi district in south Assam.
Hailakandi Superintendent of Police Pabindra Kumar Nath informed that three cases have been registered at Hailakandi police station in this connection.
The incident took place at Laskarbazar, a weekly cattle market, on October 11.
Altogether 12 persons, including policemen, were injured in the incident.
A group of irate villagers attacked nine persons from Sonai village in neighbouring Cachar district suspecting them to be child-lifters.
A private vehicle was torched and two police vehicles were damaged by the mob. The injured policemen were admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Of them, officer-in-charge of Hailakandi Sadar police station Hemanta Kumar Das was shifted to a hospital in Guwahati for better treatment.
The officials of the district and police administration on Thursday held a meeting with the representatives of the people, political leaders and senior citizens at the Circle Office, Hailakandi, and appealed to the people of Nitainagar not to panic and to cooperate with the administration in the investigation in order to bring the culprits to book.
The officials assured that the law will take its own course but those who are innocent need not have to fear or panic.
The meeting also felt the need to initiate confidence-building measures to instill a sense of security among the people by organising awareness meetings at gaon panchayat level. It also urged the people not to be misled or swayed by rumours.
