GUWAHATI, June 17 As many as 20 major pharmaceutical companies have proposed to set up their units in Assam and are looking for suitable land in this part of the country.

This was informed by Commissioner of Industry Department Swapnanil Baruah while talking to journalists at the Udyog Bhawan here today.

The companies include brands like Glenmark, Abbott, Himalaya and Sun Pharma, Baruah said.

He said several new projects including a tea park (Chaygaon), a pharma park (North Guwahati) and a non-polluting chemical industry (Bonda) are in the pipeline. Besides, initiatives for setting up a bamboo park, a plastic park and a jute park are also going on, the Industry Commissioner said.

On improving the traditional industry, Baruah said the industry is laying utmost stress on the overhaul of the sector, especially industries related to Assamese traditional jewellery and that a common facility service centre would also be set up for those units.

A hallmarking centre is already in place in Guwahati.

On the market of Assamese traditional jewellery, Baruah said the Chief Minister has already asked the Reserve Bank of India and the Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India to set up a gold bank for local jewellers so that the quality (purity) of the gold along with its pricing is maintained.

Elaborating on the multi-disciplinary skill development programme for the local youths in the non-traditional sectors, the Industry Commissioner said all the four crucial aspects including training, equipment, capital and market are given due importance.

The industry department has trained 2,374 youths from 2012 to 2104 and provided recruitment to 737 of them.
