2 teachers suspended, headmaster transferred

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

JORHAT, May 1 - Two teachers of the Auniati Satra High School in Majuli have been suspended from service for their alleged involvement in the incident of cutting of hair locks of about 20 students of the school on April 27.

The headmaster of the said school Prasanta Dulakaharia has been transferred from the school pending departmental inquiry against him.

The move comes after the inquiry conducted by the Inspector of Schools (Jorhat and Majuli districts), Dr Subhalaxmi Rajkumari, as per direction of the Majuli Deputy Commissioner Debaprasad Misra, found involvement of Kanak Dutta and Rupeswar Hazarika (assistant teachers) in the incident.

Dr Rajkumari, when contacted, told this newspaper today that she has suspended both the teachers after their involvement in the case.

She said that departmental action will be initiated by the Government as per rules of the Education department against the teachers.

Dr Rajkumari said that on the basis of her inquiry report, the Director of the Secondary Education PK Jidung has transferred Dulakaharia from the headmasters post and has directed her to hold the charge as headmaster of the school temporarily.

It may be mentioned here that there was an uproar after the news of the incident of cutting hair locks of the students reportedly at the behest of Dulakaharia spread across the island.

There were severe protests by leading organisations, including AASU demanding action against the headmaster and those involved in the incident.

An FIR too was lodged at the Kamalabari police station of Majuli over the incident by some guardians, but it was withdrawn later after Auniati Satra authorities reportedly intervened and tried to resolve the matter amicably.
