2 suspected militants killed in Garo Hills

TURA, June 28 � The police in North Garo Hills tasted further success in their fight to counter the threat of militancy by killing two militants.

The militants were killed in a joint police and Army operation in a place, about 105 kms from Tura.

The operation was undertaken by a joint team of Dogra Regiment of the Army posted in Assam along with the North Garo Hills police.

According to police, an operation was launched on information on the presence of militants belonging to the Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) in the jungles yesterday. However, the encounter happened this morning close to the village of Radigre on Resubelpara-Bajengdoba road.

�There were two militants when our team spotted them and asked them to stop. They, however, began to shoot at us after which, we retaliated and in the ensuing gunfire the two were killed. We suspect them to be members of AMEF�, said SP of NGH, Ramesh Singh.

The place of encounter is only about 150 metres from the main road, about 8 kms from Resubelpara. The police recovered one 9mm with three live rounds, one 7.65 pistol with two live rounds, one mobile, three sim cards and one bag.
