GUWAHATI, Feb 7 � Two students of Gurukul Grammar Senior Secondary School are feared dead after they went missing in the river Brahmaputra near Sector 1 in Noonmati�s Chunchali area, under Noonmati Police Station this morning.
The duo identified as Sahir Ahmed and Simanta Saurav Gayan, both Class IX students, are yet to be traced by the rescue team of National Disaster Response Force, River Police and the City Police. The duo had gone to the riverside along with five of their classmates, all from the same school around 11 am.
According to the version of one of the five students questioned by the police, the incident took place after Sahir Ahmed, allegedly in drunken state, had an accidental fall in the river.
�Simanta, who according to his friends� version was also drunk, while trying to make an attempt to rescue Sahir also went missing in the river,� police said, informing that one of the five students presently being questioned by the police was also found in an inebriated state.
All the five students were later medically examined for alcohol consumption at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.
The students also told police that they had assembled together to have a group discussion over an assignment given by the school before heading to the riverbank.
The joint rescue operation was called off after it got dark.
