2 officials held for extortion

JALUKBARI, April 1 - Police today arrested two members of a flying squad for allegedly extorting money from a businessman at Pamohi in Guwahati. The arrested have been identified as Dipankar Hazarika and Ali Kamal Hussain.

Police said the duo from a flying squad formed by the Kamrup deputy commissioner while checking vehicles under West Guwahati assembly constituency, found one Jahangir Alam, a businessman from Barpeta, carrying Rs 2.50 lakh cash in his vehicle.

When Alam failed to produce proper documents against the cash he was carrying, the flying squad members demanded Rs 1 lakh to let him go, police said, adding, the duo later settled for Rs 50,000.

Based on an FIR lodged by Alam, the Gorchuk police later arrested the flying squad members. The arrested duo was produced before the court and sent to jail today.
