2 killed, churches damaged in Mizoram storm

AIZAWL, March 31 � At least two persons were killed and 2,900 houses damaged as a storm swept across Mizoram snappping communication and power in different parts of the State last night.

A 60-year-old man was killed in house collapse and three persons, including the old man�s grand son, were seriosly injured in IOC Veng locality of Serchhip, official sources said.

Another person was killed as a tree, uprooted by strong wind, fell on him at West Phaileng village in Mamit district during the same time.

The gale, called �to� in local parlance, coupled with hailstorm in Mizoram, had struck different parts of the state since Sunday night and rendered at least 5,000 people homeless, officials of the state Disaster Management and Relief said today.

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla informed the state assembly today that officials were working overtime to deliver relief materials to the affected people.

�In Serchhip district, the Deputy Commissioner ordered closure of government offices so that government officials are able to participate in rescue and relief work,� Lal Thanhawla said.

He said more than 10 churches and a number of government and school buildings were damaged in the storm.

Official reports said Aizawl district was the worst hit with 1,143 houses damaged, followed by Serchhip and Kolasib districts where 514 and 503 were damaged respectively, the officials said.

A total of 2,814 houses were destroyed all over the state, excluding Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai district where no reports had been available due to communication problems.

Reports from other districts also referred to snapping of power lines and damaging communication towers damaged, the reports said. � PTI
