GUWAHATI, Dec 11 The kidnapped Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel are suspected to have been killed by cadres of the Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB). But their bodies have not yet been recovered and operations to locate them are still on.
Highly placed security sources told The Assam Tribune that the information available indicated that the abducted persons constables Nakul Medhi and Anil Kumar Yadav who were members of the unarmed wing of the SSB, were killed. But no one can officially confirm their deaths till the bodies are recovered and operations in the area from where they were kidnapped are still on.
Medhi and Yadav were kidnapped on December 6 from the Labdangguri area in Baska district when they, with three other colleagues, went out for patrolling on bicycles. Though a massive manhunt was launched to rescue them, so far no trace has been found.
Sources said that according to available inputs, both Medhi and Yadav stumbled upon a camp of the NDFB (S) while patrolling the area and they were immediately taken into custody by the militants. As the SSB personnel were not armed, they failed to offer any resistance. As they had seen the camp of the militants, senior leader of the NDFB, B Bidai ordered their execution. Interestingly, Medhi, belonged to the same village of Bidai and they knew each other. Despite the fact, the NDFB leader ordered their execution because they had seen the camp of the outfit.
The incident raised a few questions on the operations of the SSB. It is been questioned why unarmed constables of the force were sent on patrolling in an area from where the movement of the heavily armed NDFB militants were reported. Sources admitted that it is a common knowledge among all the security forces that members of the NDFB(S) are active in the area and it was not proper on the part of the senior officers of the SSB to send an unarmed patrol party to the area.
It may be mentioned here that the SSB has been entrusted with the responsibility of guarding the international border with Bhutan. But guarding the border is not the easiest of tasks because of the terrain. It is an open border with no restriction on movement of nationals of both the countries. In the past also, the SSB personnel came under attack from the militants belonging to the NDFB and once even an assistant commandant of the force was killed.
