By Newmai News

IMPHAL, Nov 20 - A major mishap was averted today with the timely detection of two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which were planted along the NH-150 at Napet Palli under the Lamlai PS in Imphal East district.

Traffic on the highway was blocked for a few hours till experts from the Manipur police bomb detection and disposal squad defused the IEDs at around noon.

Police said that a road opening party (ROP) of 6 Assam Rifles detected the IEDs when they were sanitising the area.

They detected two objects wrapped in a black polythene sheet, which were subsequently confirmed as explosives by a sniffer dog.

Soon after, troops of 15 Assam Rifles from a nearby post and Lamlai Police rushed to the spot and secured the area. The road was immediately closed for vehicles as well as pedestrians as a precautionary measure.

The bomb experts were called in, who finally defused the IEDs.

According to the experts, the IEDs weighed around three kg each. These were medium-intensity and remote-controlled IEDs.

Meanwhile, State Police commandos conducted cordon and search operations at various places in Imphal East and Imphal West districts and picked up 14 individuals after they failed to produce documents to establish their identities.
