2 hurt, 3 held as police fire on mob

GUWAHATI, Nov 13 � Two persons received injuries, one of them bullet injury, when police personnel opened fire at Chamata Pathar under Sonapur Police Station today to chase away a mob of the local people who were protesting against the alleged nexus between the police and the Star Cement authorities. It needs mention here that the Chamata Pathar people have been protesting against the bid of the Star Cement authorities to set up a cement factory in their area. The person, who received bullet injury, has been admitted to the city�s Nemcare Hospital.

According to SSP, Guwahati, Pradeep Chandra Saloi, the matter is under investigation and three persons, who were members of the mob have been arrested. The mob allegedly attacked a police patrol party, the SSP said.

However, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has alleged that its activists at Chamata Pathar were beaten up by the police without any provocation for the entire day today and in the process two of the local residents � Barun Dey and Munnaf Ali � received bullet injuries. Both of them were shifted to Nemcare Hospital. But in the evening, Munnaf was taken to some undisclosed destination by the police.

Two KMSS activists Sujit Dey and Sanjib Dey were picked up by the police in the early part of the day. Sujit is the secretary of the Sonapur unit of the KMSS. Ropjan Begum, Anima Begum and Sultan Sheikh were also picked up later on. Both Sujit and Sanjib were brutally tortured at the police station and later they were shifted to Gauhati Medical College Hospital, alleged KMSS secretary Akhil Gogoi and warned that he would go for an indefinite fast in case the authorities do not stop atrocities on the Chamata Pathar people.
