JORHAT, June 15 - Barpathar Police of Dhansiri sub-division (Civil) of Golaghat arrested two staff of the State Excise Department for their alleged involvement in the illicit liquor trade that reportedly led to the death of seven persons two weeks ago, including a woman from Singimari and adjoining villages.

A police source said that the arrested persons are Excise Sub Inspector Rudra Gogoi and Constable Golap Regon.

The duo are among six Excise Department staff who were placed under suspension by the Government with immediate effect on June 4 after reports of the deaths allegedly due to consumption of hooch surfaced on June 3.

The staff were suspended for negligence in discharging their duties. The police action comes after the Dhansiri SDO (Civil) Bipul Das lodged an FIR at Barpathar Police Station on June 6 in connection with the deaths allegedly due to hooch consumption.

A case (No. 64/2018) was registered at Barpathar Police Station and investigation was started, which resulted in the arrest of the two Excise Department employees, the source added.

The other employees who were suspended from service are Dulu Morang, Imran Hussain, Rahul Amin and Prasanta Gogoi (all constables).

The source stated that police investigation found that the Excise Department staff were allegedly in connivance with a local illicit liquor trader who was running the business through fastfood outlets in the area.

Officer incharge of Barpathar Police Station Bhopal Ram Borah told The Assam Tribune that the duo were arrested on Thursday and produced before the Dhansiri Sub-Divisional Judicial Court yesterday. Bora said that the court sent the arrested persons to judicial custody.

He said that investigation was on and if needed more persons will be booked. Meanwhile, the other four Excise staff have been granted interim bail by the Gauhati High Court, the OC said.

Earlier on June 3, two persons were arrested for their involvement in the illicit liquor business. Among the arrested was an owner of a fastfood kiosk that reportedly doubled up as a bar to sell illicit liquor.

Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Gaurav Bothra had earlier ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
