JONAI, Aug 6 Tension prevails in Sisiborgaon area of Dhemaji district in the aftermath of the August 3 incident in which an elderly person was killed at Amguri Oyengia village for suspected practice of witchcraft and his wife was tortured. The situation has worsened after the police exhumed the body of Tabang Mili on Friday.

The police, following investigation of the case registered at the Silapathar PS, today arrested two persons, Manu Mili (34) and Kanak Mili (20). Several others may be booked in connection with the witch-hunting case following the duos statement. A number of persons involved in the murder are absconding, fearing police action, Investigating Officer Atul Hazarika said.

Police sources informed that the irate villagers, after killing Tabang, set fire to his house and destroyed all household property. The police, in view of the tense situation, have put the area under strict vigil and regular patrolling is being done to avert further attempts by the villagers who are allegedly targeting some of the deceaseds colleagues on the same charges of 'witchcraft.'

It was the second incident of witch hunting in the area in less than a year. At September-end last year, a mob killed one Lalit Taye, suspecting him to be a practitioner of witchcraft, at Bhagavan Borgaon village under Silapathar PS. This case is also under investigation. The mob had buried the body of Taye in his courtyard.
