AGARTALA, April 29 - Police have arrested two persons a constable and a TV anchor for allegedly spreading rumours on social media about Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Debs family.

Islam Uddin, a constable of state police, was arrested from Dharmanagar area of North Tripura, while Saikat Tapapatra, a TV anchor cum government school teacher was nabbed from the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala on Sunday.

While Islam was granted bail on Sunday, Saikat was produced before a local court seeking police remand for interrogation. Police see a larger conspiracy behind spreading rumours against the Chief Minister.

Police are investing the case with due care, keeping in mind its sensitivity. Those who had a role in spreading rumours will not be spared, said an official of West Agartala Police Station on Monday.

On Sunday, Chief Ministers wife Niti Deb made it clear that she did not file any divorce case as rumoured on the social media platform since Thursday. The rumour was aimed at defaming my family publicly. It is very unfortunate and I want law to take its own course, she said.
