By Correspondent

TURA, April 25 - Two persons from Phulbari area in West Garo Hills district were arrested after they allegedly strangled their friend before dumping his body in the Jinjiram river near Phulbari.

The shocking incident took place on April 23. However, the body of the 18-year-old victim was discovered on April 24 by fishermen.

According to the police, on Wednesday evening, information was received that one body was recovered by the villagers of Kurkarpahar in West Garo Hills from the Jinjiram river on the Assam-Meghalaya border. The victim was identified as Alom Mondol of the same village.

On investigation by the police, it was learnt that on the preceding evening, at 7.30 pm, Alom had gone with one Sofial Sheikh (18) and Malu Sheikh (24). The duo are residents of Bashmura in Borkolia Shershow under the Fakirganj Police Station in Assam.

Alom, however, did not return that night and it was only at about 3.30 pm that his body was recovered by fishermen from the river. The body was allegedly hidden under a boat and surfaced when the fishermen moved the boat for fishing.

A group of villagers later caught the two suspects and were about to assault them, but they were stopped by village elders who later handed them over to the police at Phulbari.

The body of the victim was later sent to the Tura Civil Hospital for post mortem, while the two accused were taken into custody.

Apparently the motive for the murder was enmity between the victim and his friend, Sofial, who was looking for an opportunity to take revenge and murder him. The victim was killed by strangulation, said West Garo Hills SP Dr MGR Kumar.
