2 elephants mowed down by goods train

GUWAHATI, Sept 27 - In a tragic incident, two elephants, including a calf, were killed after being hit by a goods train at a place between the Patharkhola and Lamsakhang railway stations under the Lumding Division in the wee hours today.

The incident took place at around 1:15 am. The pachyderms were hit by the goods train while they were trying to cross the railway track and both died on the spot. �The exact place where the incident took place is a notified elephant corridor. There is a speed restriction of 30 km per hour for all trains in the notified corridor.

The goods train was travelling within the prescribed speed limit. Despite that the accident took place. A fact finding departmental inquiry has been ordered to find out the cause of the incident and find out if there was any human error,� Subhanan Chanda, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), said.

Among the two elephants that died, one was an adult female and the other was her calf. �The bodies were removed from the track within two-three hours and regular train services resumed operation through the stretch,� he said.
