SIVASAGAR, June 12 � Two persons lost their lives in river Dikhow in Sivasagar this evening under tragic circumstances.
Muni Bora (35), a newly married man, drowned when he was beaten up mercilessly by police in river water after a long chase. Muni was trying to flee when policemen arrived at a spot near the bridge when a few persons were playing cards. Police chased him down and started caning him and even tried to prevent him from coming out of the water. Muni never came out after a while. All this happened before the eyes of the villagers who were looking helplessly as the police went on beating Muni.
This led to a great hue and cry in the village and a search operation was launched to trace Muni�s body, in which police, jawans and a few youths of the village took part. During the search, rather tragically, a village youth also drowned when he failed to negotiate strong currents of the river.
Angry villagers later blocked the road demanding arrest of the guilty policemen. Police had to fire in the air to disperse the mob. The bodies are yet to be traced.
One drowned in Rangiya: A boy was feared drowned when his boat capsized in river Brahmaputra in Kamrup (Rural) district yesterday, reports PTI. Mongola Ali (18) of Nizbamundi Rakshyas-Shani Char was alone in his boat when it overturned in the mid river, police said today. A search operation was launched by the river police to trace Ali.
Earlier on January one last, seven school children out on a picnic had drowned at the same site when their boat had capsized.
Mysterious death: Sensation prevails at Tiniali area near Tezpur under Bebejia police outpost following the mysterious death of a newly married woman of the locality, our Tezpur Correspondent reports.
According to the information available, the body of Nipa Barua of Lakhimpur, who got married to Jibanta Barua of Tezpur Tiniali area on April 12 last, was found this morning. Though it is suspected to be a case of suicide, family members of the deceased have alleged that she has been murdered for dowry.
