NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Aug 20 - Two persons possessing a fake gold statute of Christ were detained by the police at Nowboicha on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, the officer in-charge of Nowboicha Police Station detained the duo and seized the statue as they were heading towards Laluk on a rural cab on the NH 15 in the 12th Mile area. The detained persons belong to Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, and they bought the statue from a seller at Garchiga under the Nowboicha Police Station. Later, they were released by the police.
Areas like Garchiga, Barchola, Mohghuli, Pandhowa and Tinithengiya in Lakhimpur district have earned a dubious distinction in spurious gold trade by luring buyers, mostly from Arunachal Pradesh.
