JORHAT, Aug 13 � Two policemen were suspended following an incident of death of one Guddu Bora (17) while he was chased by Titabor Police today.
Thousands of irate people of the locality gheraoed the Titabor police station, pelted stones at the policemen and shouted slogans as the boy drowned in a pond behind the ASTC office, Titabor in front of the police. They accused that police did not make any effort to rescue the boy.
According to a source, Guddu Bora, who hailed from Bejijan, Titabor stayed in a rented house near ASTC office at Titabor. He was a vegetable vendor. On August 11, a number of miscreants, namely Mahendra, Rupam, Deokan, Raktim, Sumanta and Utpal physically assaulted Guddu�s mother Joya Bora. She went to the Titabor PS just after it. But the ASI Chandan Goswami refused to register the case.
Then Guddu beat up Deokan and Raktim on his own. But the duo lodged an FIR at Titabor PS against Guddu. Thereafter, police was in search of Guddu.
Today, police noticed Guddu in the market at Titabor and chased him at about 2 pm. Guddu fled and the police went after him. But suddenly Guddu fell down in a pond behind the ASTC office, Titabor. As he did not know how to swim, he went under water. But police even after noticing him drowning, did not make any attempt to rescue the boy. The body of the boy floated on the surface of the water of the pond an hour later which was recovered by the local people there.
Sensation prevailed in the whole area as the news spread throughout the town. Public came out to gherao the police station for the negligence of police. As the situation became worse, a constable, namely Tukheswar Gogoi opened fire into the air. Jorhat SP Sanyukta Parashar arrived at the spot to calm the irate mob.
She immediately suspended both Chandan Goswami and Tukheswar Gogoi by an order to save the situation. She also assured Joya Bora to provide proper justice.
