AIZAWL, June 28 - Two men in Saiha district of south Mizoram were recently convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, after they were found guilty of sexually assaulting minors.

JS Robert Nohro, a Hindi teacher of a government primary school, has been found guilty of molesting a seven-year-old girl of the school which, according to the court, amounts to aggravated sexual assault on children less than 12 years old.

As per the statement of the victim, the incident took place in 2016 inside the school headmasters room.

A medical examination was conducted on her in January this year. Taking into account the medical report and the statements of the victim and her mother, the special POCSO judge found beyond reasonable doubt that aggravated sexual assault was committed on the girl. The accused was convicted under Section 6 of the POCSO Act.

In a similar case, the special judge also convicted a 59-year-old man of Siahatla village in Siaha district for sexually assaulting two minor girls, aged seven and nine, who are sisters.

The accused was sentenced under Section 6 of the POCSO Act to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3,000 was also imposed.
