ITANAGAR, May 1 - Achieving a major breakthrough, Koloriang Police today arrested two accused in the murder case of a gaon burah in Kurung Kumey district.

In a major breakthrough, Koloriang Police have arrested the two main accused in the Bengia Tamang murder case reported on April 25 at Taba village in Kurung Kumey district, stated the PRO of the Arunachal Pradesh Police Headquarters here today.

Bengia Tamang, the gaon burah of Pakpu village, was shot dead, allegedly by supporters of a contesting candidate for the Koloriang Assembly seat, on April 25. He had reportedly gone to Taba village to escort genuine voters to the Taba polling station, where repoll was held two days later on April 27.

Following the incident, an irate mob, comprising mostly women, ransacked and vandalised the office of the Kurung Kumey SP on April 29, protesting against the alleged failure of the police to arrest the culprits involved in the killing of the gaon burah. The protesters even demanded suspension of the SP for the delay in nabbing the murder accused.

Later, Kurung Kumey SP Rajiv Ranjan Singh constituted a special team of officers under the guidance of DIGP (West Range) Apur Bitin, comprising his deputy, Tokin Saring, Deputy SP (Basar) Techi Nega, Sub Inspector N Tao and STF commandos.

The team worked round the clock and raided potential hideouts at Taba and Damin from April 27 to 30, leading to the arrest of the two accused Lokam Talo and Lokam Baba. Police search is on to arrest the third accused, Lokam Kani, the PRO said.

The case has been transferred to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), PHQ, for thorough investigation, the PRO added.
