19 more State govt officers arrested

GUWAHATI, July 18 - After being quizzed for more than couple of hours at the Assam Police�s Special Branch headquarters, all the 19 State Civil, Police and allied services officers summoned for handwriting test today were arrested by the Dibrugarh police.

Those arrested include 13 Assam Civil Service (ACS) and three Assam Police Service (APS) officers besides a District Transport Officer and two tax officers.

With this the number of arrested persons in the cash-for-job scam in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) has shot up to 65, including 54 APS, ACS and allied service officials.

The ACS officers arrested today are Utpal Bhuyan, Barnali Das, Susovan Das, Dhruvojyoti Chakraborty, Manzoor Ilahi Laskar, Moon Mazoomdar, Mustafa Ahmed Borbhuyan, Md Saibur Rahman Borbhuyan, Monika Teronpi, Ganesh Chandra Das, Srabanti Sen Gupta, Deepsikha Phukan and Leena Krishna Kakati. The arrested APS officials are Gulshan Daolagapu, Pallavi Sharma and Bhargav Phukan.

Further, Rituraj Neog, Superintendent of Taxes and Nipon Kumar Pathak, Inspector of Tax, too were arrested alongside Suranjita Hazarika, the Guwahati-based District Transport Officer.

Sources informed that the investigators had already collected the specimen of the handwriting of all the accused officers from the respective offices, which reflected �serious� discrepancies. Today as well, the investigators collected the fresh specimen of their handwriting.

Later talking to media persons, Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Gautam Bora and investigating officer Surjeet Singh Panesar said that the arrests were made based on the findings of the forensic reports.

Investigators claimed that discrepancies were found in several answer scripts, which include up to three tampered answer scripts belonging to one candidate.

The arrested Government officers would be produced before the Court of Special Judge, Assam tomorrow.

Police further said that two other accused � Debarata Dey and Sanjan Phukan � have agreed to become approvers in the case.
