187 years of Byaspara Prathamik Vidyalaya

By Jyotish Kumar Sarmah

The light of education touched Byaspara village five hundred years back. It can be presumed that the Byas songs which have been sung by Byas Pandits or Ojas were purely based on the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Since these songs didnot have any script they could not be easily kept in mind. In this context, we can take the name of some old books of Sachipaat written in Kaitheli language found in the residence of some prominent personalities of Byaspara.

After observing some important fact and figures, we have come to know that the famous Byas-Oja Chando was born in the year 1800 AD. The son of Chando Oja, Bhumidhar Sarma was appointed as Muktiar by the British and he had to move to Calcutta to report on matters entrusted on him.

It is learnt that he had to learn English to report matters in English in Calcutta. After a detailed investigation on this chapter, it has come to the notice that a few persons like Chando Oja, Bani Pandit tried to establish one primary school by constucting a house with localy available materials like Nora, Birina etc., in the year 1822 to impart education to the intersted young pupils.

But this enterprise became a reality in the year 1830 after establishment of the Byaspara Prathamik Vidyalaya and this Vidyalaya has been imparting education to the people of western Darrang since last 187 years.

Pundit Dineswar Sarma, who received the prestigious Tamra Patra (Copper Plate) from the former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi in the year 1972 in New Delhi as the first Satyagrahi of Darrang district, freedom fighter and veteran advocate Tapeswar Sarma, freedom fighter and president of the then district Congress party, Tankeswar Sarma, Niti Kabi Dhanai Bora, Pundit Bireswar Sarma, Pundit Banikanta Deka, Adhyapak Ranjit Bhattacharyya etc., were some of the prominent students of the school during the early part of 20th century. Hereafter also, this institution has created several numbers of students who have been able to show their talents in different aspects in India and abroad.

It is a matter of great pleasure that the people of village Byaspara along with its ex-students are going to celebrate the Post Centenary Platimum Jubilee (Uttar Satabarsha Maha Rajat Jayanti) of Byaspara Prathamik Bidyalay on March 25 and 26.
