18 individuals, 3 teams get excellence awards

GUWAHATI, Nov 7 - The 3rd NEEDS Excellence Awards ceremony was held at the ITA Machkhowa on November 5 during which 18 personalities and three teams from different fields were felicitated and awarded for their contribution in their respective areas, said a press release today. The event was organised by NGO North Eastern Economical Development Society (NEEDS).

The awardees were Dr Nomal Chandra Bora (social work), Wasbir Hussain (journalism), Jayanta Malla Baruah (debate), Mahadev Deka (bodybuilding), Ram Avtar Awarwal (entrepreneur), Mayur Bora (literature), Dr Ravi Kanna (health), Indrani Raimedhi (journalism) and Lou Majaw (music).

The Youth Icon award was given to Deepa Karmakar (sports), Utpal Das (acting), Kamal Dey (fashion photography), Mami Varte (music), Amanjeet Kaur (bravery), Dr Soumen Bharatiya (cultural development), Tanu Riba (fashion designing), Himankan Das (entrepreneur) and Gautam Gupta (social work).

The three teams that were awarded included Virangana (women empowerment), Scorpion Protection Agency (security service) and Concept Education (education).

The chief guest of the event was Femina Miss India � World Priyadarshini Chatterjee. She took part in a ramp walk. First runner-up of MTV�s show �India�s Next Top Model� Jayantee Hazarika inaugurated the show. Among the special guests were Dr Navanil Baruah, Col PM Goswami, Raja Mallik and noted social worker Minaram Baruah.

At the cultural programme held on the occasion, Mumbai-based singer Anaya, dance choreographer Uday Shankar, along with personalities from the Assamese film industry Sunita Kaushik, Vivek Bora and Pompi Das gave performances.
